Maranello, 26 April – This past weekend, the Misano World Circuit provided the backdrop for the opening round of the Italian Gran Turismo Championship, now in its eighth year. Of the 34 cars taking part, the F430s did well in the two races, which brought together competitors in both the GT3 and GT2 classes. The F430 driven by Andrea Montermini and Emanuele Moncini (Villorba Corse) was fifth in the overall classification behind the Porsche 991 GT3s of Patrick Pilet – Gianluca Roda, Paolo Ruberti – Fabrizio Del Monte and the two Audi R8s of Filipe Albuquerque – Marco Bonanomi and Rinaldo Capello – Gianluca Giraudi. This was enough to win its category ahead of the other two Ferraris of Rui Aguas – Alessandro Garofano and Massimiliano Mugelli – Andrea Palma. In the second race, the dynamic duo managed to take the lead at the start, crossing the line ahead of the AF Corse F430 GT2, crewed by Marco Cioci and Piergiuseppe Pierazzini and the Pilet-Roda Porsche 991 GT3, with third in the category going to the Ferrari of Palma and Mugelli.

The second round is two weeks away, over the weekend of 9 May, on the Piero Taruffi Circuit at Vallelunga, and Montermini and Moncini now head the Italian series on 27 points, ahead of Cioci and Perazzini, both on 19. Next up, one point down, are Palma and Mugelli.

Round 2: Vallelunga 1

Circuit

Vallelunga

A great Ferrari spectacle at Vallelunga
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 10 May – After the first round held in the breathtaking environment of Misano by night, the Italian Gran Turismo Championship now moved to the Piero Taruffi circuit in Vallelunga.

The first race for the GT Cup ended in a photo-finish with the first three cars all within just over a second: the F430 of Mapelli-Mancini (Vittoria Competizioni) and the female crew of Cerruti-Linossi (AeffeM) took second and third places on the podium, behind the Porsche 997 of the GDL Racing team, crewed by Castellaneta-Formilli Fendi. In the GT2 class, first place went to the AF Corse Ferrari of Aguas-Garofano, ahead of the F430 of Broniszewki-Peter (Kessel Racing) and Mugelli-Palma (Vittoria Competizioni.)

After two closely fought races on Saturday, the second day was also dominated by Ferrari. In Race 2 of the GT2, the podium in the main class was all red, the highest step going to Moncini-Montermini (Villorba Corse) ahead of Mugelli-Palma and Aguas-Garofano. In the GT Cup race, the Maranello Rossa of Bocellari-Goldstein (Kessel Racing) won ahead of the Porsche 997 of Fratti-Caffi (Autorlando) followed very closely by Mapelli-Mancini.

The overall classification sees Moncini and Montermini (Villorba Corse) already leading after the Misano win, still heading GT2 on 50 points. Mapelli and Mancini (Vittoria Competizioni) are comfortable leaders in the GT Cup on 52.

The Italian Gran Turismo championship will be back in action at the Umbrian Magione circuit over the weekend of 6 June.

Round 3: Magione

Circuit

Magione

Ferrari wins at Magione and Jarama
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 7 June – It was a very satisfying weekend for Ferrari, in action at the Magione circuit in Umbria, for the third round of the Italian GT Championship and at the Jarama circuit for the second round of the Spanish GT Championship.

32 crews tackled the tight and twisty Magione track, with cars from the Maranello marque distinguishing themselves in the GT class. Race 1 witnessed a dominant performance from the Ferraris of Piergiuseppe Perazzini-Marco Cioci (AF Corse,) Andrea Montermini-Emanuele Moncini (Villorba Corse) and Massimiliano Mugelli-Andrea Palma (Vittoria Competizioni) who recorded a clean sweep of the podium, followed by the AF Corse cars of Alessandro Garofano-Rui Aguas and Michele Rogolo-Giuseppe Ciro, who took the chequered flag in fourth and fifth places.

Race 2 saw Garofano and Aguas get the upper hand, leading away from the start to finish ahead of the F430 GT2 cars of Mugelli-Palma and Cioci-Perazzini. Montermini and Moncini thus lead the current standings in the GT2 class with 70 points, seven ahead of Garofano-Aguas and eight ahead of Mugelli-Palma.

In the Spanish GT Championship, the F430s entered in this important round ended the first race with a fantastic triple: heading the Ferrari dominance was the ART team’s F430 crewed by Juan Manuel Lopez and Manuel Giao, who crossed the line ahead of Jesus Diez and Maximo Cortes (Jesus Diez) and Alvaro Parent and Francisco Crus Martins (ART.)

Parente and Cruz went on to finished third again in the second race, behind the Porsche 911 of Miguel Amaral-Miguel Angel de Castro and the winning Ferrari in this leg, entered by the Automobil Club d’Andorra and driven by the current series leaders, Manuel Cerqueda and Alan Sicart.

Both series will be back in action over the weekend of 4 July: the Italian one at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari Circuit, while the Spanish one takes to the track at Albacete.

Italian GT Championship - Rugolo and Ciro, champions of Imola
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 5 July – Over the weekend just gone, the F430 GT2 cars entered in the Italian Gran Turismo Championship were front runners for the fourth round of the season, held at the Dino e Enzo Ferrari circuit at Imola. Winners of both races were Giuseppe Ciro and Michele Rugolo, driving for the AF Corse team.

The formidable duo, at the wheel of one of three Ferraris entered by the team from Piacenza, finished ahead of the other F430s of Emanuele Moncini-Andrea Montermini (SC Villorba Corse) and Alessandro Garofano-Niki Cadei (AF Corse) in Race 1, while in the second race, they got the better of Massimiliano Mugelli-Andrea Palma (Vittoria Competizioni) and Michael Dalle Stelle-Nicolo Valentini (Edil Cris Racing Team.) Thanks to this result, the crew of Moncini-Montermini consolidates its lead in the championship, on 90 points, 8 ahead of Mugelli-Palma and 12 in front of Garofano.

There are less than three weeks to go to the fifth round of the series, which takes place at the Mugello circuit, over the weekend of 25 July.

Italian GT Championship – Ferrari on track at Mugello
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 26 July 2010 – Two particularly hard-fought battles characterised the fifth round of the Italian Gran Turismo Championship, held at Mugello’s Autodromo Internazionale at the weekend.
Of the six Ferraris entered in the GT2 class, it was the car driven by Marco Cioci and Piergiuseppe Perazzini, one of the three entered by the AF Corse team, that won. They crossed the line ahead of the F430s of Andrea Montermini-Fabio Moncini (Villorba Corse) and Michael Dalle Stelle-Nicolò Valentini (Edil Cris).
In the second race it was another AF Corse-run Ferrari that won, this time driven by Michel Rugolo and Giuseppe Cirò. The pair finished ahead of Massimiliano Mugelli-Andrea Palma (Vittoria Competizioni), while third place again went to Dalle Stelle and Valentini.
Thanks to these results, Montermini and Moncini retain the lead of the class on 110 points, followed by Palma-Mugelli (102) and Cioci-Perazzini (86).
A long summer break awaits the protagonists of the Italian series, which will be back on track for the sixth round at Vallelunga on the weekend of September 26.

Round 6: Vallelunga 2

Circuit

Vallelunga

Ferrari full house in Vallelunga
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 27 September – After a long summer break, the Piero Taruffi circuit at Vallelunga, hosted the Italian Grand Touring Championship for the sixth and penultimate round of the season, prior to the finale which takes place at Mugello on 24 October. On the Campagnano track (Rome) this past weekend, Ferrari enjoyed great success, with two breathtaking clean sweeps of the podium in both races.

First across the finish line in Race 1 was the Villorba Corse F430 GT2 car, crewed by Emanuele Moncini and Andrea Montermini, who were followed by the Ferrari of Marco Cioci and Piergiuseppe Perazzini (AF Corse.) Third place went to the Edilcris F430 GT2, in the hands of Raffaele Giammaria-Piero Necchi, who having started from pole, then lost ground to their rivals. Montermini mounted an attack in the final stages when he was hot on the heels of the Ferrari of Alessandro Garofano (AF Corse) who ended up going off the track after the two cars just touched. On lap 21, Montermini then passed Piero Necchi (Edilcris) to go second, finally taking the lead thanks to yet another passing move on Piergiuseppe Perazzini (AF Corse.)

In Race 2, Michele Rugolo and Giuseppe Ciro (AF Corse) stood on the highest step of the podium, followed by the crew of Marco Cioci-Piergiuseppe Perazzini (AF Corse) and Massimiliano Mugelli-Andrea Palma (Vittoria Competizione,) second and third respectively. Starting from pole, the winner of Race 1, Montermini (Villorba Corse) made the most of his starting position to maintain the lead ahead of the AF Corse Ferrari of Rugolo and Perazzini. The race came to life on lap 25 when the drivers changed over and Moncini, relaying Montermini, collided with Luca Rangoni (AF Corse) with a move that was deemed to be less than correct. Taking advantage of this scrap, Giuseppe Ciro (AF Corse) went into the lead, to take a fourth win of the season ahead of Moncini (Villorba Corse) who was then given a 25 second penalty for the previous incident at the hairpin, which dropped him to sixth place.

Going into the final round at Mugello at the end of October, the championship classification features the usual names, with Montermini-Moncini (Villorba Corse) leading the GT2 class on 132 points, followed by Palma-Mugelli (Vittoria Competizione) on 120 and Cioci-Perazzini (AF Corse) on 110 points.

Round 7: Monza

Circuit

Monza

Moncini and Montermini take the title in Monza
Source: Ferrari

Monza, 24 October 2010 – The champions have been crowned in the Italian GT Championship at the final round of the season, held this past weekend at the Monza circuit. In fact the titles were decided at the end of the first race in which the GT2 class was won by the Ferrari of Andrea Montermini and Emanuele Moncini (Villorba Corse,) which was enough to see them take the title. Race 2 was therefore something of a victory lap for the winners, with an all-Ferrari podium: on the top step was the crew of Lorenzo Bontempelli-Beniamino Caccia (Kessel Racing,) followed by the F430 GT2 of Andrea Montermini and Emanuele Moncini (Villorba Corse) and that of Michele Rugolo-Giuseppe Ciro (AF Corse) second and third respectively.

The general classification confirmed the Maranello marque’s dominance, with Andrea Montermini-Emanuele Moncini coming out on top with 147 points followed by the other Vittoria Competizione crew of Andrea Palma and Massimiliano Mugelli on 122 and the AF Corse team’s line up of Marco Cioci-Piegiuseppe Perazzini on 117 points.
