To much snow in Maranello

New Ferrari launch cancelled because of snow

Maranello, 2 February – There was no let up from the snow last night, which continued to fall on Maranello and the surrounding area and the situation does not appear to be changing this morning. The forecast is still bad both in terms of predictions of more snow fall and of a further drop in temperature.

Therefore, the decision has been taken to cancel the presentation ceremony for the new car, which was to have taken place at 10.30 tomorrow. The decision was taken because of the weather conditions and because of the difficulties that would have faced the 300 or so people due to attend from the team partners, the authorities and representatives of the media in their attempts to get to Maranello.

Photographs and all technical information relating to the car, along with exclusive interviews, will be available to all on www.ferrarif1.com.

Maranello, 1st February – The wheels on the Ferrari Formula 1 car that is being launched in two days time at the Fiorano Track are made by OZ, an Italian company that is a world leader in the world of competition and the motor industry in general and in the field of alloy wheels.

The wheels will wear the famous logo of the company from Padua, featuring the colour yellow, which harks back to the one used in the early Eighties. The agreement is for a three year period.

“We are proud to welcome OZ to the group of Suppliers to the Scuderia,” said Team Principal, Stefano Domenicali. “The brand from Padua is synonymous with quality and reliability and along with these characteristics comes the ability to meet the demands of its customers who, in an environment as competitive as Formula 1, are always looking for maximum performance. This collaboration in Formula 1 will further strengthen the ties that have linked for many years the Prancing Horse and OZ in the world of road-going cars.

A special Jeep to tackle the snow in Maranello
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 2 February –Special conditions call for special measures. Unusually, there has been so much snow falling on Maranello these past few days that, this afternoon, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso each had a special vehicle to get around in. They were the first two examples of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, the quickest and most powerful Jeep ever built. The cars were handed over to the Scuderia Ferrari drivers by Beth Peretta, Director Marketing and Operations SRT Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC.

The two cars had a special trim, bringing some exclusive styling details and the unmistakeable Rosso Corsa colour which is a distinguishing feature of the cars from the Maranello marque. The two Grand Cherokke SRT8, personalised for the Scuderia Ferrari champions are the first of the new high performance version of the Jeep flagship to hit Europe, where it will go on sale this summer.

“We are excited and proud to be able to hand over the exclusively personalised “Ferrari-style” versions of the most powerful and fastest Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 of all time to two of the most talented drivers in the world,” said Beth Peretta. “We are sure Fernando and Felipe will feel perfectly at home at the wheel of these cars that take styling cues from Ferrari with Rosso Corsa bodywork and that represent the pinnacle in terms of performance for the Jeep brand. Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 offers all who love driving, a unique combination of the amazing capacity of the Jeep on road and track, with the pinnacle of personalised style and technology.”

Maranello white-out
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 1st February – It’s not the first time and it certainly won’t be the last that snow has put in an appearance on the eve of the launch of a new Ferrari Formula 1 car. However, it seems that this year, the weather gods really want to have their say. From late yesterday morning, Maranello has been hit by snow, with no sign of a let up. Work to set up the structure that will host the launch ceremony is still going ahead, even if it is not proving straightforward. The forecast is not exactly comforting, as snow is set to continue falling at least until tomorrow morning and the temperature will continue to drop, getting down to the -10º mark, which will make for icy roads.

The situation is far from simple, as can be seen from the fact that the Maranello local authorities and those surrounding it (including Modena) have announced the closure of all schools at all levels up until Saturday 4 February.

It now looks as though there is little chance of carrying out the planned promotional filming featuring action shots of the car at the Fiorano track: even if the snow was to stop it’s hard to imagine that the escape roads could be cleared of their blanket of snow which is gradually building up.

Snow in Maranello, sunny and hot in Lanzarote
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 31 January – At the Fiorano track, preparations are underway for the presentation of the new Formula 1 car and in Lanzarote in the Canary Isles, the training camp is coming to an end for Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Jules Bianchi and Davide Rigon.

The four drivers, along with the physiotherapists who look after them throughout the season, have spent the past few days tackling different sports, ranging from mountain biking to football, from tennis to ping-pong, not forgetting canoeing and working out in the gym or on the beach. All of this has taken place in very different conditions to those in Maranello, as the drivers enjoyed average daily temperatures of 20 °C.

The Lanzarote course was not only aimed at improving physical condition, which is absolutely vital in a demanding sport like Formula 1, but it was also an important exercise in team building, both because the competitive nature inherent in all the drivers spurred them to work even harder and in the right spirit and also because, spending time together reinforces the friendship between them.

In a few days, all four of them have important appointments. Jules will make a lightning visit to Maranello, before flying to England to start a new adventure as reserve driver for Force India, while, on 3 February, Fernando and Felipe will be taking part in the launch ceremony for the car they will be driving as from the Jerez test (7-10 February.)

Davide, who has recently extended his agreement with the Scuderia for two more years, will also be in Maranello: a lot of work awaits him in the simulator, in support of the development of the car that will see the light of day for the first time in a few days.

The programme has been established for the drivers in the three test sessions which take place prior to the Australian Grand Prix: in Jerez, Felipe will begin the development work, with Fernando closing the test; at the first Barcelona test, (21-24 February) it will be the Spaniard who drives for the first two days, with Felipe taking over for the final two; at the second session at the Catalunya Circuit (1-4 March) the driver order will again be reversed. Meanwhile the weather forecast for this week in the Maranello area is not very encouraging, with predictions of snow and very low temperatures. This means there is a real doubt as to whether it will be possible to carry out any promotional filming at the Fiorano track prior to heading for Jerez de la Frontera. It’s a very long way from Andalusia to the Emilia region and the departure of the car transporter with the racecar on board cannot be delayed any later than the afternoon of the fourth.

Maranello, 24 January –Today, for the first time, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso made actual contact with the car they will drive in the 2012 World Championship. The two Scuderia Ferrari drivers were in Maranello today to try out their seating position in the very first car to be assembled over the past few days at the Gestione Sportiva.

It also provided the opportunity for the drivers to meet up with Stefano Domenicali and the engineers and to be brought up to speed with development of the car. Felipe and Fernando, along with Jules Bianchi and Davide Rigon, will spend the next few days at a training camp in the Canary Isles taking part in a programme aimed at putting the finishing touches to their physical training, prior to the start of the season. Their next public outing will be on 3 February at the Fiorano track, for the presentation of the new car to the media and the Scuderia’s partners.

Montezemolo at Wrooom: “Not a pretty car? It can look lousy if it’s quick!”
Source: Ferrari

Madonna di Campiglio, 11 January –Before leaving Madonna di Campiglio, Luca di Montezemolo could not get out of casting an eye on the now imminent start of the coming race season.

“We will launch the new car on 3 February in Maranello and my hope and that of all our fans is to have a car that is competitive right from the start,” said Montezemolo. “It will be an interesting championship, with so many world champions taking part. Our two guys, Felipe and Fernando seem in great form and everyone else is working flat out on every detail. Domenicali said the car would not be pretty? I’d like it to look lousy: I say that provocatively because I want it to be a winner, reliable but also “simpatico” in the sense that it knows how to win with a smile!”

Montezemolo was asked if, in a year as difficult as the one Italy is currently going through, there is an even greater responsibility for Ferrari to be winning again: “Absolutely,” was the reply. “Each one of us, whatever our job, must contribute to upholding the name of our country around the world. We are putting in a lot of effort on the preparation of the car and so too are the drivers: we are confident and have high hopes. “I have told Felipe to prepare well, both mentally and physically and I hope he finds a car that is better adapted to his driving style, maybe with the softer tyres,” concluded Montezemolo – A question for Fernando? I believe he is the one to ask if this car will be quick or not. Because the fact he is quick is a certainty and maybe the question will be asked of him in Jerez after he has done the first kilometres at the wheel of the car to see what it’s like. The world championship title? We came very close in 2010, a long way off in 2011 and we want to win it in 2012. That’s easy to say, but harder to do, but we have an extraordinary sense of determination to get it done.”

Domenicali: “The new car? Different, not particularly pretty and we hope, quick!”

Madonna di Campiglio, 11 January –Serenity. That was the aura given off by Stefano Domenicali, who has been Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari since January 2008. His is no easy task: when you are at the helm of the most successful team of all time in Formula 1, there is almost an obligation to keep it winning at all times. If that induces any particular anxieties, especially after a disappointing year like the one the team went through in 2011, one would be hard pressed to spot it from Stefano’s demeanor and he was also keen to explain the reasons for his serenity. “Going into a season suffering from anxiety does not help and it’s an attitude that serves no purpose.

“Clearly, this will be a tricky year, but that is part of any sport, even more so when one looks at the environment in which Ferrari operates. There are expectations that need to be managed as well as possible and I am well aware that the emotional aspect is very important in a team like ours. But that will not change my approach: we will not get over excited if things go well, nor will we be down if we have some difficulties, especially at the start, because we know this is going to be a very long season. We must stay grounded and calm, maintaining our motivation and concentration.

“Of course, winning is our primary objective and I believe we are preparing ourselves in the right way for this. Everyone is working hard on improving the performance of the car, paying great attention to every little detail. I expect even those who have just joined us to make a significant contribution to what is already a strong group of people. Because once in a while a breath of fresh air can liven things up.”

Asked to describe the new car that will be launched in Maranello on 3 February, Domenicali had this to say: “It’s definitely different, because it represents a clear break with the past in terms of the design philosophy. It’s not that pretty, because the shape defined by the technical regulations does not leave much scope, but, and this is what counts really, our hopes are that it is at the very least quick! I asked our engineers, as far back as last summer to look into every little nook and cranny of the rules to push it to the limit, but up until we see the other cars we will not know if we have taken it to the limit or are within it. Then, to really understand the hierarchy we will have to wait for qualifying in Melbourne: we must always bear in mind that the times one sees from testing are not always what they seem. At Jerez and the two Barcelona tests, we can get a rough idea but nothing more.”

New arrivals at Maranello

Madonna di Campiglio, 11 January –As had been hinted at during the usual pre-Christmas meeting with the media, a few additions have been made to the Scuderia structure and there have also been some changes made within its organisation.

The most significant were set out this morning by Stefano Domenicali during his meeting with the media: “From the 2 January, Steve Clark joins us from Mercedes to work as a track engineer, while also joining Ferrari is Hiroide Hamashima, previously Technical Director at Bridgestone Motorsport. He will head up a new project focusing on an in-depth assessment of an area crucial to performance, which is the interaction between the car and its tyres and he will also be our technical link to Pirelli. Both men will report to Technical Director, Pat Fry.”

Ferrari has always applied technology transfer between race track and road, making it one of its strong points and part of this has also involved movement in both directions in terms of personnel. This explains Marco Fainello’s move to the Technical Direction of the Gestione Industriale, where he takes on an important role in the area of simulation.

Madonna di Campiglio, 11 January –The car with which Ferrari will tackle the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship will be presented to the media and the team partners at the Fiorano track on 3 February. The announcement was made this morning by Scuderia Team Principal, Stefano Domenicali, during a press conference at Wrooom, the event that kicks off the Prancing Horse’s race season.

“As has been the case for many years now it will be a very conventional ceremony,” said Domenicali. “If the weather is good enough, right from the afternoon of the third, or more likely the following day, the car will run at Fiorano to fulfill some promotional obligations, before tackling its first real test at Jerez de la Frontera on 7 February.”
